Thanks so much for another super informative newsletter. A close family member in San Jose, who is generally extremely careful, got COVID recently either at a nearly empty grocery store when she ran in for a few items OR at a July 4th party that was 98% outdoors (brief jaunts inside to help with food prep). No one else at the party seems to have been sick.
Two weeks ago I got another Covid shot. The man who administered it to me informed me that this is my "last one" and seemed to have the attitude that I shouldn't be getting one. I told him that my doctor's office said that I needed to do it, so I was doing it. Frighteningly, he said that they at Walgreens have to follow the CDC, not what my doctor says. I wasn't trying to argue, but it was bizarre. I got the sense that he resented having to give me the shot. So odd.
Hi Mary, I'm glad that you were able to get the booster. I don't know what the future will bring, but I hope that people who want the boosters can get them.
Your pies look delicious. I’m reading this while recovering from my fifth round of Covid (risked attending a large wedding of a very dear nephew…ah well). I got my most recent vaccine in late April; my daughter hadn’t gotten one yet this year. She also caught a case at the wedding and is having a much harder time. (Also, razor blade throat? Do NOT recommend!) My point: get your vaccine as soon as possible!! Especially you younger folks, given RFK Jr’s upcoming (and unscientific) limits on who can get them!
Thank you, as always, for your hard work. Your communities (in real life: PIES! and online: KNOWLEDGE!! Citations!!!) are so lucky to have you.
Thank you for keeping us up-to-date. More than I can absorb, as I'm not a medical professional. But I am an ME/CFS patient and aware of the research linking it to mitochondrial dysfunction. My pulmonologist at National Jewish Hospital found similar with long covid, as part of a team of researchers.
Question: " Researchers noted that diabetes drugs like saxagliptin and vildagliptin, which inhibit DPP4 (an upstream regulator of SMPDL3B), could potentially be repurposed to help manage ME/CFS." --- Is this something I could ask my pulmonologist or primary care provider to consider prescribing for me? For what it's worth, I am also consistently on the border of prediabetic and normal A1C, if that makes a difference.
I believe that these meds have not been trialed for this purpose yet- i.e. it is theoretical at this point. But, you could discuss your particular case with your doctor.
Super helpful info - thank you! I’m 64 and had my co-vid booster January before I saw my new born grandson and now I’m leaving in a few weeks to see him again in the UK. I live in Sacramento where it’s high in the waste water and am considering getting a 2nd booster now before I leave and not waiting until fall. It’s so hard to know when to get the boosters - if they only last 4 months.

Any recommendations?
Hi Sally, I can't give medical advice, but you are correct that immunity against infection does not last for more than a few months after a booster.
