Some friends who are “non-vaxers” tell me they won’t take the vaccine because it can cause cardiovascular damage or even death like COVID does. Is there any truth/data to support that belief? Thank you!
The mRNA COVID vaccines have been given to millions of people around the world and they are safe. There is a very, very small risk of temporary myocarditis (inflammation of the heart) in young men who get 2 doses of the vaccine close together. But, vaccine-induced myocarditis does not last that long and people fully recover. The risk of getting myocarditis from a COVID infection is much higher than getting it from a vaccine.
We know from large studies that getting even an asymptomatic COVID infection can increase the risk of cardiovascular damage and stroke over the next few years.
There is a small risk of Guillain-Barre disease after any infection or vaccine. But, the risk is extremely low and it can happen with viral infections as well. People could have an allergy to a part of a vaccine and they should not get the vaccine if they are allergic.
